The Value of Sorghum

One of the questions we get asked the most is....“What actually is sorghum?”

And honestly,
we love this question! Sorghum is the beating heart of our activated chips. We’re big believers in it, and hopefully by the end of this post, you will be too!

What is sorghum and where does it come from?

Put simply, sorghum is an ancient super-grain. Originating from North-eastern Africa, it has been used for centuries by various tribal groups due to its amazing properties. Fascinatingly, while sorghum isn’t widely used or grown in the United Kingdom, it is a staple in many parts of the world so we are incredibly proud to be one of the only UK growers of sorghum.

What is the nutritional value of sorghum?

Sorghum is a nutrient-rich grain, packed with essential vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants, and protein. Beyond fibre, it is a hugely beneficial plant-based protein source, contains a multitude of different B vitamins, and offers a brilliant gluten-free alternative grain option. Its complex carbs also release energy gradually, helping to keep blood sugar levels steady and keeping you fuller for longer.

What is the environmental value of sorghum?

In a time where we know and understand the importance of environmental sustainability, sorghum presents itself as one of the most climate conscious grains. Initially, it is ‘water smart’, meaning it uses up to 30% less water than other grains, with 91% of all sorghum grains being fed by rainwater alone. Furthermore, it helps protect soil nutrients and moisture, whilst also removing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in the soil, ultimately cleaning the air and helping in the fight against climate change

What does sorghum mean for Boundless?

To us, sorghum is more than an ingredient. Using sorghum means that we can protect the environment, stay health conscious, and make delicious snacks for you! Our process of sprouting the grain to activate further ensures that we can make the most of the plentiful nutrients.

We go one step further by sprouting the grain, a process known as "activation". This means we soak the sorghum to kickstart germination, helping to break down compounds that can make nutrients harder to absorb. As a result, your body can access more of the good stuff like fibre, vitamins, and minerals and makes them easier to digest.

All in all, sorghum is a super grain that we make even better for you and your gut.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
