Gut Healthy Supermarket Swaps

Gut health is so important to us at Boundless. Your gut dictates more than just your digestive health, but it can seriously influence your mood, immune system, and more. But sometimes it is hard to know where to start...

Fortunately, we’ve compiled a handy list to simplify gut health by offering a selection of super easy supermarket swaps to promote gut health and hopefully make healthy choices less intimidating!

1. Swap white bread for a sourdough loaf

Much of the flour in white bread or processed loaves can be described as ‘refined’, where the fibre that is naturally present in the flour is stripped. Instead, get your hands on a Sourdough loaf. This swap aids your gut health due to the fermentation process of making sourdough, which ultimately promotes the production of gut-happy prebiotics to support digestion.

2. Swap milk chocolate for dark chocolate

Everyone loves a sweet treat, but conscious snacking can make a huge difference to your gut health. Swapping milk chocolate for a high cocoa percentage dark chocolate is a small shift that can make a big difference, due to the presence of Polyphenols. Polyphenols are plant compounds that act like prebiotics which feed beneficial bacteria  in your gut, helping them thrive. They also have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help reduce gut inflammation and support overall digestive health.

3. Swap low-fat flavoured yogurts for plain Greek yogurt

While low-fat products can be tempting, they are typically thickened with cream, thickeners or stabilisers which can cause irritation to the gut. Instead of going down this route, full-fat Greek yogurt is full of protein, gut-healthy bacteria, and full of probiotics which are great for your gut health.

4. Try to reduce ingredients wherever possible

With the rise of ultra processed foods (UPFs), there have been growing concerns over their impact of the gut microbiome. With additives such as thickeners, artificial colours, and artificial flavours present in many foods, a simple way to promote gut health in everyday life could be as easy as trying to only purchase foods with ingredient lists you recognise.

5. If you are drinking alcohol, try to make gut healthy swaps

Studies show that red wine (in moderation…) has been proven to increase gut microbiome diversity thanks to its high polyphenol content. So, if you’re indulging in a drink, red wine could be a better gut-friendly choice than beer or spirits.

6. Swap crisps for more gut healthy alternatives

Everyone loves a salty snack, but highly processed snacks like crisps can have negative impacts on gut health. Switching to options that include more natural ingredients (like Boundless Chips…), means you still get to enjoy a crunchy and delicious snack, just not at the cost of your gut health.

Let us know your favourite swap!
